Who Runs the World?

Who Runs the World?

Who runs the world? Well, me…literally because like an idiot with no sense of direction, I made a wrong turn and added a 5k onto my already long run. #SundayRunday. But I’m jumping forward a bit. With half marathon training at its peak, I’m logging some serious miles. The race is at the end of this month and that means…NEW SHOES. I’m so happy to review my first run with my new Brooks Glycerin 15 running shoes. I’ve gone back and forth wearing Sauconys and Brooks mainly because with Brooks, they usually felt a little heavier than my Sauconys, although they had great support and cushion for long distance runs. HOWEVER, after running with the new Glycerin 15 shoe, Brooks is back in the game. They are SO much lighter (like my Sauconys) and they seem to have even more cushion than before. Some reviews mentioned that the toe box was smaller, however I didn’t think so at all. I always order a half size up for my running shoes to begin with. My test run was about 4.5 miles and I certainly had happy feet from start to finish. I mean, as a runner, when your new running shoes arrive…I can’t slap my Garmin and running clothes on fast enough.

Since they passed the shorter distance test run, I couldn’t wait to try them out for Sunday’s long run (that was supposed to be 11 miles). As stated earlier, because I have zero sense of direction, my run turned into 14.5 miles with SO many hills. Now if that wasn’t a test for these new shoes I don’t know what would be. Oh and let’s not forget that it was insanely humid and hot outside. Of course. This also means my schedule has since been cleared for the rest of the day. Yay me for getting grocery shopping out of the way the other day…because this girl isn’t doing SHIT for the rest of the day. Well…except for eating my calories back. The amount of salt that was coming off of me was disgusting. It was even more disgusting when my furbaby Luigi sauntered on over and started to lick my arm. Does anyone else’s furbabies do this? What a weirdo. But since I survived my run and made pretty good time despite the heightened anxiety of possibly being lost, a post-run selfie was obviously in order. I didn’t die, I made it home in one piece…and my new Glycerins didn’t fail me. Holllaaaa.

I also need to give a shout-out to the hubs for running his very first 5k! Well by now he ran a couple more, but man am I so proud of this guy. It only took me like…8 years to get him into it, but…SUCCESS MUAHAHAHA. One day I went off on my run and he went off on his and we got back right around the same time. Full disclaimer, he kind of wanted to kill me for snapping a selfie since he kind of felt like death afterward and I was all “but first lemme take a selfie.” Me: deal with it. 😀

Running aside (yes I know, there’s more to my life than running) I was a bachelorette for the latter part of this week. The hubs was away at a convention and this girl got some serious chill time in and caught up on some reading and trashy TV shows that the hubs loathes entirely. I’m currently reading What She Knew by Gilly Macmillan and I’m OBSESSED. I’m really digging this new author and can’t wait to read more from her. If you’re looking for your next suspense novel, I highly recommend it! Other books I have lined up to read are:

Really, Half-Priced Books is my go-to, especially when I want to discover new authors. And with an extra 20% off Labor Day sale, I filled my basket to the brim! #booknerd. My sister also had her house warming party yesterday, she’s such an amazing hostess. She cooked up the most amazing spread for brunch and had mimosas ready as soon as you walked in. I need to take notes….or take a cooking class. Haha. After the party I managed to get together with the bestie for some girl time and snagged some awesome back-to-school deals. I love benefiting off of something that I no longer have to worry about. Nordstrom Rack is seriously my jam. As someone who REALLY is working on spending less and budgeting more, this place is amazing. By the end of the day, I was ready to Netflix and chill. Luigi agreed. He also serves as a great blanket.

And now that August has come to an end, it’s time to say goodbye to summer and HELLO fall. We’ll be dismantling the pier soon and bringing in the boats (which is always a sad day) but I must admit, fall is my favorite season. Bring on the cozy sweater weather, bonfires, changing leaves and breezy fall running. So goodbye, summer. It’s been real.

XOXO

Weekend Recap: Fort 2 Base Race…I survived Hero Hill

Weekend Recap: Fort 2 Base Race…I survived Hero Hill

This weekend was nothing short of jam packed full of festivities. I feel like this will be the race that keeps on giving thanks to the hilly course. Sore everything. Can’t I just have a recovery day and work from my bed? Linking up with Biana today!

On Saturday the hubs and I went to a preseason game and while our Bears lost, we still enjoyed the sunshine and overpriced beer. Carbloading like a champ on game day.

14063715_10101655439553147_2884481903789802016_n

It was supposed to be storming all day…but ummm…well the sunshine was out and I even got a sunburn to prove it. I really think if I were to have a career change, I would choose to be a meteorologist. You don’t have to be right. Ever. This was the “storm” we had to suffer through. LOL.

IMG_5428

I can’t wait until the regular season starts! Although I’ll enjoy the warmer games while I can. December games in Chicago? YEESH. Frozen beer, frozen fingers. The Bears aren’t looking so great this year, but I still have faith!!

IMG_5432

The only thing that got on my nerves were a bunch of other 20-somethings seat-hopping. The hubs and I got up during halftime to get some food and by the time we got back to our seats, some other dudes were in them. Zero time for that shenanigans. This happened at least four other times to people in front of us too. #annoying. We didn’t let it ruin our fun though. We didn’t even let the Bears losing ruin our fun. We scored ONE touchdown. That’s all I wanted bahaha.

After the game I realized how awfully dehydrated I was which is no bueno the day before an 11.5 mile race. The messed up thing was that pop was just as expensive as a medium pop….$5 for a bottle. Insanity.

Once we got home I followed tradition with a pasta dinner, polished my playlist, and went to bed super early for my 3:30 a.m. wake-up call. Why do I keep on doing this to myself? (I always end up asking myself this, and yes I keep on doing it). I don’t know about any other runners out there, but I tend to sleep like crap the night before a big race.

What was even more amazing though was my sister agreeing to tag along to cheer me on! I love my big sis. She’s the best. Really. The Fort 2 Base race is such a great experience though. Those who were running the 10NM race (equates to 11.5 land miles) started at Fort Sheridan and ran to the Great Lakes Naval Base. My granddad was a Marine so I OORAHED throughout that whole race, especially when I saw active or veteran Marines on the course. It was such an honor. They were even along the sidelines cheering us on throughout the whole race and especially when we got closer to the base. At the very end, they have what is called “Hero Hill” and let me tell you…it took EVERYTHING I had left in me. It was the steepest hill I ever ran up and after running through 10 miles of 100 million percent humidity…man it was brutal. But with the help and cheers of active service men and women….I pushed my hardest and crossed that finish line. Hallelujah!!!

14141707_10101656428291707_6442178329154775251_n

Give me water, give me electrolytes, give me all the salty things. Seeing my sister there at the finish was the best. She’s my biggest supporter hands down. She ran up to me armed with my peanut-butter filled pretzels and water.

IMG_5458

After I salted and hydrated up, a selfie session ensued (of course). I pushed my body SO hard during this race and I have zero regrets. The perfect way to end a race. WINNING.

14064182_10101656428296697_7390894234805721634_n

I ended up burning 1,800 calories during this race so I equate that to me being able to eat/drink whatever the hell I want for the remainder of the day. Starbucks here I come!

IMG_5474

Needless to say, the latte did not interfere with me totally passing out on the couch when I got home. Perfect way to end a Sunday right? One race down and a few more to go!! My next half marathon will be on September 11th honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in addition to those who are still active and veterans. It’ll be an emotional race, but again, I’m so honored to take some out of my day to stop and appreciate those who put their lives on the line for our freedom. Now it’s time to prep for the work week ahead. I can’t even believe Labor Day is right around the corner!! Let me tell you, I can’t wait for big sweaters, jackets and boots. Yep I said it. I’m still debating when it would be socially accessible to wear my new boots….tomorrow? Please say yes. 😀

Cheers!!

Training Days

Training Days

Training days….story of my life right? Well I’m the idiot who decided to sign up for 3 half marathons within weeks of each other. No big deal right? Yeesh! Okay well technically my race coming up this Sunday (Fort 2 Base race) is a 10NM which equates to 11.5 miles. The start line is at Fort Sheridan which is pretty awesome and there’s NO roundabout. If you’re a runner, you’ll appreciate this. For me personally, there’s nothing worse than knowing you’re on mile 4 and you look over to the left and you see a mile marker for mile 8. It’s a mindfuck and it just makes me want to throw up my hands and throw my hydration belt into Lake Michigan. My mileage has been kind of low during the week which worries me a bit but I’ve been on my A game with my long runs on the weekends and training like a damn beast when it comes to my crosstraining days. Why? Because this girl doesn’t have time for another injury. Also, a friend of mine said that I now have Madonna arms. Madonna may be old, but she is JACKED. Holla!

IMG_5102

I’ve got the workouts down and my nutrition has been pretty good too. Staying properly hydrated too is so difficult…mainly because the bathroom at work is down a VERY long hallway and well you know….the struggle is real. #Ihavetopee24/7.  One of the other ways I’m staying on top of my fitness game those is with Beachbody’s Cize DVDs with Shaun T. Man….I have to say…those dance routines kick your ass AND you feel like Britney Spears in your own home. I highly recommend it. You don’t need any crazy equipment, just some floor space and your dancing shoes! Sometimes I’ll do a routine before my run…with this humidity…some may think I jumped in the lake.

IMG_5237

One of the tiresome parts of training is showering. I feel like I shower twice a day at least because of my workouts and sometimes I just ask myself if it’s worth all the trouble? I’m sure my coworkers would appreciate the smell of a post 8 mile run in this weather.

In other – and not really – fitness-related news, I stopped in at Victoria’s Secret after work today since their new tote is adorable and like any shopping addict, I had to check it out. I walked in, looked to my left, and what did I see?! THIS. Victoria’s Secret stole my blog name! WHAT?!

IMG_5263

RUDE. Just kidding. I kind of love it and well umm…thanks for the free advertising, VS! There was one left so I obviously had to get it. Then I got sucked into another long sleeve workout top, etc…etc…in all, I totally scored some awesome stuff AND got the new fringe tote AND workout bag fo free. FO FREE. I’m all for free, high-quality bags. I highly suggest you snag these deals up ladies! I love how you can stack deals at VS. They also have a sport bra and workout pant deal for $50. Because one can never have too much workout apparel right? TGIF! It’s Friday!!!

Cheers!

Everything Hurts & I’m Dying…Not Really

Everything Hurts & I’m Dying…Not Really

Hey guys! Well, since I’ve fully recovered from my injury, I’ve finished a couple of half marathons (they were brutal). I was totally unprepared in regards to how much this injury would throw off my longer distance running game. NO IDEA. I feel like my usual fuel routine just wasn’t working anymore and my head was totally out of the game and going rogue by mile 10. That being said, my long distance training runs were very few and far between. Since I have a few weeks until my next race, I’ve decided to REALLY focus on my pace and not slacking on my long distance training. I had so many thoughts during these two half marathons that just made me want to peace out.

1. The heat. Eff that glaring sun that makes you feel like a sizzling piece of bacon. You then feel like bacon…you start thinking about bacon…BOOM mindset is elsewhere and you want to quit and go eat bacon.

2. Holy hills. So have I been really fantastic when it comes to incorporating steep, rolling hills into my training lately? NOPE. So when those came around every other mile I wanted to cry a little bit, swear a lot a bit, throw my running shoes into the lake.

3. The humidity. I’m a Chicagoan…which means we’re a bunch of fairies when it comes to humidity in comparison to any southern folk. I HATE IT. It happened to be 1,000% humidity out during my second half and I felt like someone was crushing my lungs with each stride. (insert another dramatic comment here).

4. Why did I do this to myself? My side hurts, my stomach is cramping up, please God let this end…at least Beyonce is helping me pull through….

5. This is the longest mile of my life.

6. The bling better be effing amazing.

7. Curse that sign that says “you’re almost done” and you’ve still got a 5k left…I’M NOT ALMOST DONE. Quit playing games with my heart….(bonus points if you get that reference).

8. You see the top athletes fly by you and finish and you’re wondering if their amazing, unicorn athlete sweat will spread onto you and make you into said unicorn, super fast athlete…

But then YOU finish…and then you get that runner’s high and you have so many thoughts such as:

– I’M DONE! THIS MEDAL IS AWESOME!

– *Takes several selfies with said bling…

– Where are the bagels? The pretzels? Give me salt. Give me something. I’m empty.

– I might vomit. Please don’t throw up. I need to sit. No, I need to stand.

– If I can just avoid having to go to the bathroom until AFTER I get home that will be splendid. I don’t know if I’ll make it….I better make it…

– *takes more post-race selfies

– When is my next race?! I can’t wait!!

I’m convinced that most runners are masochistic addicts because of these very things. I’m totally owning up to it. It’s fine. The soreness I feel after a long run? I love it. It’s painful, I end up doing a bear crawl up the stairs…and I secretly love it. I love pushing my body to new limits. Oh, and the bling. Holllllaaa. And to prove it, here are the selfies…

13221107_10101546413901427_8711203852928182386_n

Oh and that ferris wheel? Yeah it definitely spun. This Chicago half was the first leg of a half marathon series (the second half is coming up in September). This was my first half marathon back after my injury. I hated my time, but thinking how I finished without ANY pain in my tendon was a victory for me…seeing that finish line was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. I think I even fist-pumped in the air.

11116E71-6B72-4CB9-9D95-AC970B37ADAB

This half was a couple of weeks later and it rained….A LOT and once again my time sucked…but not as bad. PROGRESS. Once I recovered from my injury I was such a pansy getting back into my normal pace in fear of injuring myself again. Knock on wood…I’m getting those miles in at my normal pace again and I am one happy runner!

And I now close this Monday morning post with Apollo…with his face planted in one of my shoes…the ones I just ran 10 miles in….I can’t even…

Get Healthy, Stay Healthy!

Get Healthy, Stay Healthy!

You know on some days you would think spring is here in Chicagoland, but then you get a week like this one and you’re back running in cold gear! Last week I ran my very first race since I injured my hamstring tendon. To say that this was a HUGE milestone would be an understatement. Up until race day I was hobbling home in pain after just 3 miles. This race was 6.5 miles and while I of course had to compromise my pace a little, I ROCKED it. I was so happy. The only thing that was a little sad was the size of the medal. Bahaha. Hey, runners love their bling.

I was so happy to share the moment with my fave running buddy.

IMG_8975

The day after was an even better reason to celebrate since I didn’t have any post-race pain, just the nice sore feeling of burning so many cals. That being said, half marathon training needs to be kicked into high gear now that it’s April and my first half of the running season is May 22nd. Eep! Balancing training and the new job is definitely proving to be a challenge, but while my workouts have been a little inconsistent, my diet and hydration needs to be on point. Also, the best part about my new gig is that instead of taking the elevator, I take the stairs. Did you know just 10 minutes of walking up stairs can burn around 100 calories for someone who weighs about 160lbs? 10 MINUTES. Even better, my building has its own gym on the first floor.

It’s so easy to get sidetracked when you have such a huge life change like getting a new job, but I’m slowly getting back on track. Some ways I’m making sure my training won’t suffer AND so I won’t injure myself again:

  • Keeping my huge water bottle at my desk and keeping it by my side as I go from meeting to meeting. Staying hydrated while race training is a must!
  • Don’t over train. Just because a day was missed, don’t double up the next day and tear up those muscles beyond repair. Train smarter, not harder.
  • Like I said, take the stairs when you can. If you’re only going up two or three floors…TAKE THE STAIRS. It’s a mini workout that really pays off if you think about going up and down those stairs at least twice a day.
  • Cut small corners when you know you have a really busy day. I.e. take the stairs, skip the dessert for some fruit and get up and walk around during your break. Don’t obsess over every calorie (that’s silly) but these little changes will amount to a big one!
  • STRETCH. After going through so much physical therapy for my hamstring tendon, I’ll definitely never skip another pre-workout or post-workout stretch. Not stretching will definitely bust up my training plan if I don’t stretch properly when I do cardio. Again, train smart!

IMG_8908

Nutrition really is key and I always have an emergency/quick snack on me so I don’t have to go for something that will throw me off track. Some dry roasted almonds or Greek yogurt are my go-tos. I’m constantly out and about so the ability to just throw a healthy snack in my bag and go is a must. I’m teaming up with Chobani in their mission to promote healthy living! In celebration of Chobani’s Simply 100 Crunch line, they’re encouraging everyone to “crunch the numbers” by dedicating themselves to living a healthier life. Here are some great ways to burn 100 calories even during the work day! (Graphic courtesy of Chobani).

chobani_100cal_12version (1)

How am I going to stay healthy so I don’t land myself back into physical therapy? I’ll have to keep reminding myself that I just won’t be able to PR for quite some time or else I’ll be back at square one again with my injury. Just try and tell a runner to slow down her normal pace…it’s not easy, but it must be done! The exciting thing is that there are running trails around my new office building and my coworkers are ALSO fellow runners. Although I’m still too busy to leave the office to go for a run in the middle of the day, it’s still an option! I just can’t wait until the warm weather is here to stay so I can…..

IMG_8781

How are you committing to staying fit and healthy? Join the challenge!

Cheers!!
